The Port Authority Trans-Hudson connects Manhattan to Newark, Hoboken, and Jersey City — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
PATH operates four main lines connecting New Jersey to Manhattan, running through underground tunnels beneath the Hudson River. All lines run 24/7 — service frequency varies by time of day.
Runs from Newark Penn Station through Jersey City to the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan. The longest PATH line — about 30 minutes end to end.
Runs from Journal Square in Jersey City through Hoboken and across to Midtown Manhattan, stopping at multiple Manhattan stations. Best line for Midtown access from NJ.
Direct service from Hoboken Terminal to Midtown Manhattan, running via the uptown Manhattan stations. Resumed full weekend service in 2026 for the first time since 2001.
Connects Hoboken Terminal directly to Lower Manhattan / World Trade Center. Quick connection for Hoboken residents heading to Downtown or for NJ Transit transfers at Hoboken.
Flat fare regardless of distance. Newark to WTC costs the same as Hoboken to 33rd Street. A $0.25 fare increase took effect May 3, 2026. Source: Port Authority PATH fares page.
PATH and NYC Subway are separate systems. There is no free transfer between PATH and the subway. Each requires its own fare. Budget $3.00 for PATH + $3.00 for subway if you're connecting to a subway line in Manhattan.
PATH does not accept MetroCard. Use any of these options at the fare gates:
Tap any contactless credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) directly at the fare gate. No setup required — just tap and go.
Tap your phone or smartwatch via Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay. Same $3.00 fare, no app needed.
PATH's reloadable transit card. Load value at PATH stations or online at panynj.gov. Useful if you don't have a contactless card.
Not accepted on PATH. MetroCard is NYC Subway only.
Check which line goes where. Not all PATH lines stop at every station. The NWK–WTC line does not stop at 9th, 14th, 23rd, or 33rd Streets in Manhattan — it only serves WTC, Fulton, and Broadway-Lafayette. If you're heading to Midtown, take JSQ–33 or HOB–33.
Hoboken is a major transfer hub. NJ Transit trains from the western suburbs (Morris & Essex lines, Montclair-Boonton) terminate at Hoboken Terminal. From there, take PATH to Manhattan. This is a common route for commuters from towns like Summit, Morristown, and Montclair.
WTC vs. 33rd Street. If you're heading to Lower Manhattan, Financial District, or Fulton Street: take NWK–WTC. If you're going to Greenwich Village, Chelsea, or Midtown: take JSQ–33 or HOB–33 and get off at the appropriate Manhattan stop.
2026 service expansion. Starting May 2026, all PATH lines run 7 days a week with improved weekend frequency — trains every 10 minutes on major lines between 10am–9pm. This is a significant improvement over previous weekend schedules.
Late night. PATH runs all night but less frequently — expect 20–30 minute gaps between 1am and 5am. Plan ahead if you're heading to or from NJ late at night.
