Acela, Northeast Regional, and long-distance trains across the country — all departing from Moynihan Train Hall and the original Penn Station.
Penn Station is Amtrak's busiest station in the country, with hundreds of departures daily across the Northeast Corridor and to destinations as far as Chicago, Miami, New Orleans, and Toronto. Since 2021, the primary Amtrak waiting area has moved to Moynihan Train Hall — directly across 8th Avenue from the original Penn Station.
Moynihan Train Hall is the main Amtrak terminal. The historic former James A. Farley Post Office now serves as Amtrak's primary waiting area, with the ticketed waiting area, Metropolitan Lounge, and most ticketing/check-in operations located there. Trains depart from the same tracks as the original Penn Station — Moynihan and Penn share platforms.
Penn Station serves the Northeast Corridor (Boston-DC), routes north into New York State and Canada, and major long-distance trains heading south, west, and across the country.

Arrive 30 minutes early. No security screening — Amtrak boarding is much faster than airline boarding. For long-distance trains with checked baggage, arrive 45 minutes early.
Watch the boards. Track assignments are posted on the Solari board (split-flap) and digital displays in Moynihan Train Hall and the Penn Station concourse 5–15 minutes before departure. Once track is announced, head to the platform escalators.
Tickets. Use the Amtrak app to display your eTicket QR code, or print at home. Conductors scan tickets onboard. No need to "validate" a ticket before boarding.
Carry-on rules. Two carry-on bags + two personal items, free. Each carry-on max 50 lb / 28x22x14 in. Checked baggage available on most long-distance routes (4 bags free, 50 lb each).
Boarding closes at departure time. Unlike airlines, there's no "5 minutes before departure" cutoff — but the train will leave on time. Don't cut it close. If you miss your train, see an Amtrak agent for rebooking options.
Located in Moynihan Train Hall. A quiet space with seating, complimentary snacks, beverages, and Wi-Fi. Includes baggage storage and priority boarding.
Who gets access:
Wait in Moynihan Train Hall. Brighter, less crowded, more food options, and better seating than the original Penn Station Amtrak waiting area. Same trains, same tracks.
Quiet Car works. Most Northeast Corridor trains have a designated Quiet Car — typically Car 1 or the last car. No phone calls, no loud conversations. Great for working or sleeping.
Book early for Acela savings. Acela fares are dynamic — booking 2+ weeks ahead can save 50%+. Last-minute walk-up fares can exceed $400 NYC-DC. Tuesday and Wednesday are typically cheapest.
Wi-Fi is free but slow. Most Amtrak trains have free Wi-Fi but it's not great for video calls or large file downloads. Tether to your phone for important meetings.
Long-distance trains often run late. Trains coming from Chicago, New Orleans, or Miami can arrive in NYC several hours late due to freight train interference. If you're connecting, build in buffer time.
Coming from JFK? Take AirTrain to Jamaica, then LIRR to Penn Station. ~30 minutes total, $14 off-peak. Faster and cheaper than a taxi.
